Day 1: January 1, 2010
Today is the first day of power drive. We have eight people in our program today the members include Deryk Wortman, Logan Schieffer, Austin and Christin Steffen, Matt Tramp, and Travis Poppe our advisers are Mr. Jim Schieffer, and Mr. Wil Sanger. We started by disassembling our old S72 car. Then we set up a design and measuring board. We then weighed our parts and completed a center of balance test on the first car.
Day 2: January 3, 2010
Today is the second day of power drive. Today we had nine people; they were Deryk Wortman, Logan Schieffer, Austin and Christin Steffen, Matt Tramp, Travis Poppe, and Tim Evans, our advisers are Mr. Schieffer, and Mr. Sanger. We decided to build a second car. We purchased wheels from Louisville race team and received a motor and controller from Wakefield. Right now we are working on the layout of our first of two cars. The car we are working on has an oval roll cage design. The second car, which we haven’t started on yet, will have a diamond shape to it. We have started on the layout of the wheels and the roll cage. We then set our two runners (1”square tubing) for the start of the body. The runners run the entire length of the car as a foundation for the chassis. We designed the rear wheel assembly. We made a rough cut model for testing then assigned Travis to machine the parts.
Day 3: January 10, 2010
Today is the third day of power drive. We had seven people present; they were Deryk Wortman, Logan Schieffer, Austin and Christin Steffen, and Matt Tramp, our advisers are Mr. Schieffer, and Mr. Sanger. Today we set up the rear wheel brackets on our two runners. We then set our front axle, and we also set the roll cage and nose. After everything was set, we decided to check the center of balance again. It was a good thing we did because the first test didn’t work too well. We took off the roll cage and nose and started on the center of balance test once again.
Day 4: January 17, 2010
Today is the fourth day of power drive. We had six people here; they were Logan Schieffer, Austin and Christin Steffen, and Matt Tramp, our advisers are Mr. Schieffer, and Mr. Sanger. We have finally gotten the center of balance test done and figured out how long our car was to be and where to place the roll cage. We also started on ideas for the steering and braking system. We mounted the old wheel setup from old S72. We attached the wheels and machined front wheel assemblies (kingpins) to the axles. We found we needed to build the front driver cage in order to complete the steering assembly.
Day 5: January 24, 2010
Today is the fifth day of power drive. We had three people present plus one that was here for a little while; the people were Logan Schieffer, Deryk Wortman, and Matt Tramp, our advisers are Mr. Schieffer, and Mr. Sanger. Today we started to assemble our front chassie sides with conduit and made sure we could get in and out with ease. We restarted on our design for steering and braking and finally agreed on an idea and started on the assembly of the skid steering.
Day 6: January 28, 2010
Tonight is a short sixth day of power drive. We had four people present; Austin and Christin Steffen, and Matt Tramp, our adviser Mr. Schieffer. Tonight we worked on securing our conduit fully on the front half of the car; so we could start on the steering. We mostly thought of ways to improve are steering system.
During the fall we bought parts for the second car and needed some funds. A local business in town needed its basement cleaned out due to water damage. So we got everyone together and decided to clean it out. We made $500 from the Crofton Area Development Corp.
Day 7: January 31, 2010
Today is the seventh day of power drive. We have two people in our program today. The members include Logan Schieffer and Matt Tramp our advisors were Mr. Sanger and Mr. Schieffer, also Mr. Sanger’s son Tyson. Today we placed our rear wheel and made sure it was vertical. When we finished that we placed two pieces of conduit that went from the roll cage to the back of the car.
Day 8: Feb 6, 2010
Today is the eighth day of power drive. We have five people in our program today. The members include Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, Tim Evans, Austin, and Christian Steffen our advisors were Mr. Sanger and Mr. Schieffer. Today we secured the second rear piece of conduit. After that was completed we started to weld our entire structural pieces solid.
Day 9: Feb 16, 2010
Today is ninth day of power drive. We have three people in our program today. The members include Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, and Tim Evans; our advisor was Mr. Schieffer. Today we made a mount for our motor and placed it on the car and tacked it to the frame. When that was completed we started on making are steering system permanent.
Day 10: Feb 21, 2010
Today is the tenth day of power drive. We have three people in our program today. The members include Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, and Tim Evans; our advisor was Mr. Schieffer. Today was all about the steering and front wheel alignment. We started by making our front wheels parallel. After that we made sure our wheels were straight up and down. When that was completed we made sure the wheels were parallel to the cars frame. Then we set our tie rods from our wheels to the steering system. Finally we gave the car a push to make sure that it rolls smooth and straight.
Day 11: Feb 23, 2010
Today is the eleventh day of power drive. We have five people in our program today. The members include Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, Tim Evans, Deryk Wortman, and Travis Poppe; our advisor was Mr. Sanger. Today Tim Evans, Deryk Wortman, and Travis Poppe started on the second car, while Logan Schieffer and Matt Tramp worked on the steering of the first car.
Day 12: March 1, 2010
Today is the twelfth day of power drive. We had three people in our program today. The members included Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, and Tim Evans; our advisor was Mr. Schieffer. Today we made our steering components final. We also placed an arched piece of conduit behind our roll cage, so we had something to weld the seat to and also to form our fiberglass body around to keep our shape. Finally we finished the day by constructing a mount for the motor.
Day 13: March 2, 2010
Today is the thirteenth day of power drive. We had five people in our program today. The members included Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, Tim Evans, Austin, and Christian Steffen; advisor was Mr. Schieffer. Today we placed our seat and made it permanent. We also placed are controller box and battery box. When that was completed we set our batteries in to make sure they fit and also to get an idea of where to set our motor bracket.
Day 14: March 3, 2010
Today is the fourteenth day of power drive. We had three people in our program today. The members included Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, and Tim Evans; our advisor was Mr. Schieffer. Today since everything fit we welded all of the brackets we made solid and final.
Day 15: March 6, 2010
Today is the fifteenth day of power drive. We had three people in our program today. The members included Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, and Tim Evans; our advisor was Mr. Schieffer. Today we set our brakes by running the brake cables from the tires, inside the conduit, and to our steering handles where we set a break handle. We also did the same, running wire through the conduit, with our throttle cable.
Day 16: March 6, 2010
Today is the sixteenth day of power drive. We had three people in our program today. The members included Logan Schieffer, Matt Tramp, and Tim Evans; our advisors were Mr. Schieffer and Mr. Sanger. Today we hooked up all of the electrical and found out that we can shorten all of the cables.
