Crofton Elementary School News Posted on Friday, November 14
Tony Simons – Elementary Principal
Congratulations to students, teachers, and parents on a very successful first academic quarter of the school year. In my travels around the building and classrooms I observed many vivid examples of quality teaching and learning taking place. It is truly amazing how much learning can take place in an eight-hour school day. I am excited about what we have accomplished so far and what we can achieve in the future. Parents please keep encouraging your children to work hard and set high expectations for their academic performance.
Thank you to the 65 parents who filled out our CCES parent survey during parent-teacher conferences. I will be sharing the results of that survey with the Board of Education in December and with you in the next newsletter.
I recently received a report from the makers of Accelerated Reader on student reading progress. Our consultant, Linda Borgan, called me last week to report that students at Crofton Elementary School were meeting and exceeding all of the major requirements for effectively running the Accelerated Reader program. Student reading growth was exceptional with a schoolwide average percent correct on reading practice quizzes of 89%. The goal for full implementation of the
Accelerated Reader program is 85%. This means that students comprehend what they are reading with a high degree of accuracy. Students checked out and read 6,884 books from the library during the first nine weeks of the school year. This shows that students are getting a lot of reading practice (60 minutes per day) and also understanding what they read. Encourage your children to keep up the good work in the AR reading program. Reading is fundamental to successful student academic performance.

KINDERGARTEN
Our new letters are Kk - Kangaroo and Ee we made elephants and laced around them.
We’ve been writing our numbers to 10, we even learned a song that goes with it while we
write. Some of us are really good at it.
We had a busy week,we made a pumpkin book shaped like a pumpkin,
we made green eggs, painted toast, and carved jack-o-lanterns.
Thanks to all who helped.
Thank you to Kristi Hagge for planning our Halloween party and to all who helped. It was
great!
The FCCL from the High School came to talk to the kids about Halloween Safety. Thanks
so much!
Thank you to all of you who were able to attend conferences. I am amazed at how fast this year is going.

FIRST GRADE
We have been keeping busy in First Grade. We are reading stories in our third reading book, titled "Goodness Gracious Me!" We are reading books and taking AR tests. We found out that we have to do a careful job listening to the stories. It is fun taking tests. We
have listened to lots of good stories. Sometimes we read the books by ourselves and then talk about the story. That helps us understand what we have read.
We are starting a new chapter in Math. It is our Geometry and Fraction chapter. We are learning about different shapes and their characteristics. It is fun. We are working on our
addition facts to 10. We do a one minute times test everyday. We have to remember to practice our facts at home.
In Science we are learning about magnets. We have done some exciting activities.
Magnets are fun!
Important Dates:
Nov. 25th-Dismiss at 12:50
Nov. 26th-Dismiss at 1:50
Dec. 11th- Christmas Program at 7:30 P.M.

SECOND GRADE
Newsletter October 2003
Second Grade
We had a great Halloween party! Mrs. Pinkelman planned a mummy race, pin the nose on the pumpkin, and we played a “trick or treat’ game. Thank you, Mrs. Pinkelman. We took a reading test 2 weeks ago. We did pretty well. Now, we are reading stories about
cooperation and helping others. We will also learn to write “How To” stories in this unit.
In Math we have finished out place value unit and have started studying money. Please practice with coins with your child at home. This seems to be a difficult area. Our class
has also been busy little readers and everyone has successfully become a bronze reader.
Congratulations second graders! We finished our spider unit, by having to say goodbye to wolf spider, died to limited food supply. We would like to thank Mrs. Arens for bringing the spider in for our enjoyment. We are now discussing plants and animals and how they survive in their habitats. In Social Studies we have been focusing on natural resources and many different ways to conserve them. We also have been discussing Veterans Day by making poppies and understanding their significance. We have also started cursive. We
are working on writing our names. This is something the kids really like and are getting better at.
A reminder to parents:
Nov. 25 early dismissal at 12:50 PM
Nov. 26 early dismissal at 1:50 PM
Nov. 27 & Nov. 28 No School
Dec. 11 Christmas Program at 7:30 PM
If anyone would like to donate Kleenex boxes we are always in need! Have a Happy
Thanksgiving!
****
THIRD GRADE
We have begun a new unit in Reading it is called Family Ties. We are reading stories about different families and are learning new customs from around the world. We have read about how a family works together to finish a family project. We have also read how one
family has blended two cultures together.
In Math we are beginning to study about time and money. There are many ways to practice this at home, have your child tell you the time to the minute several times a day. Have them tell you how many minutes it will be before a certain event, or how many minutes have passed since something happened. With money let them count your change, have them buy their meals charge a certain amount for each item and have them figure the total cost and count out that amount. The more practice they get the easier time and
money will be.
In Science we have been studying about the moon and the sun. We have learned many interesting facts about both. We observed how the moon travels around the earth, which causes the different phases of the moon. We learned how the earth travels around the sun, which causes seasons, and how the rotation causes night and day.
We have completed all the lower case letters in cursive and are now beginning to practice the capitals. Soon all our work will need to be done in cursive.
In Social Studies we have been learning about immigration. We learned why people move from one place to another and how it affects their lives and how they also change communities by introducing their culture to more people.
Dates to remember:
November 25, 12:50 dismissal
November 26, 1:50 dismissal for Thanksgiving
November 27, 28 no school Thanksgiving vacation
****
FOURTH GRADE
It is hard to believe that we are in the second quarter of the school year. The fourth graders successfully planned and celebrated their Halloween party. A lot of fun was had by all.
In reading, the class started a new unit called “Side by Side” which focuses on friendship and the many ways to be a friend and lend a hand. The students have been studying point of view, author’s purpose and form generalizations.
The class just finished studying plural and possessive nouns along with abbreviations and combining sentences. We have now started writing explanations by comparing and contrasting two topics.
In social studies the students have been learning about the thousands of settlers that crossed the state along the Platte River. They have studied slavery and the Civil War along with the transcontinental railroad and how it changed the state of Nebraska.
The class did an excellent job on their Native American projects. They should be proud of
themselves.

HAPPY
THANKSGIVING!
