ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER Posted on Wednesday, December 10
Tony Simons – Elementary Principal
On behalf of the CCES faculty and staff, I would like to wish all of our students and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The first half of the school year is quickly coming to an end. The second academic quarter will end on December 19th when we break for Christmas vacation. Thank you to the teachers, students, paraeducators, and parents for your efforts to help each child reach his/her academic potential.
At the end of this newsletter, I have attached the results of the Parent Survey that was distributed at Parent-Teacher conferences in October. I was a little nervous when I put this survey together because you never really know what the response will be. We had 65 surveys returned. I will be sharing the results of the survey with
the Board of Education at the December 8th meeting. I believe that the survey indicates that parents have confidence in the instruction, curriculum, and programs provided for students at CCES. As you look at the survey results, the results for the questions dealing with the Title I and Special Education programs are alittle deceiving. Many parents had no opinion about these programs since their children
may not be exposed to them. Page 1 is the questions on the survey and page two is the results. The vertical left column indicates the number of the question from the survey and the horizontal top column is the response options to the questions. I added a column that totaled the strongly agree and agree responses to the survey
questions. I was very happy to see that 89.2% of the parents surveyed rated the quality of education services at CCES as A+ or A.
In the effort to expand educational opportunities for all students, we have some new programs that will pilot during the second semester. Students in grades 3-6 will begin working with Accelerated Math, students in grades 4-6 will be using the Accelerated Grammar program, and students in grades K-6 will pilot Accelerated Spelling. All students will be using the Math Facts in a Flash program to help students master their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The great thing about all of the “Accelerated”
programs is that students of all ability levels work at their individual ability level and progress at their own pace. All of the “Accelerated” programs are computer based under the direction of the classroom teacher. By using the “Accelerated” programs students can practice and master the skills they learn so, “No Child Will Be Left Behind”.

FIRST GRADE
Our room is starting to look like Christmas. We are busy making ornaments for the tree and art pictures for the hallway. Our Christmas Program is set for Thursday, December 11th at 7:30 P.M. The first graders will be singing and signing their song.
We are continuing to read stories in Reading. We have one story left to read. We will take a test on Level 3. In Math we are finishing our unit on Fractions and Geometry. Our test will be on Monday. We are also finishing our last unit in Science. After Christmas we will
start Social Studies. My the school year is passing quickly!
Please continue to practice addition facts with you child. We need to complete 30 facts in one minute. Some of the students have reached the goal, however, there are still quite a few that have not. Your child is bringing home their AR book. Set 15 minutes aside to listen to the story and ask questions about the book.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We finished Social Studies Unit and took a Unit test. We finished our Science unit and took a test. From Dec.1st -Dec. 19th we will be studying Christmas Around the World. Then we will study 2 mystery countries in detail.

ELEMENTARY
GUIDANCE
In guidance classes we are incorporating the respect pillar from the Character Counts Program along with the social skills of greeting others, introducing yourself and others, getting the teacher's attention, accepting criticism, and accepting no for an answer.
Beginning this nine weeks we have also started units in K-5 on teasing and bullying. We are able to coordinate these topics very well as our definition of respect is "treating others
as you want to be treated". Considering feelings, building self-control, and having tolerance are all areas that we are discussing and are characteristics that help students to
respect others.
Thank you to the parents who stopped in at conference time or who have called with concerns about teasing/bullying. This is a topic that we are targeting this year. Mr. Simons has set down some very clear guidelines and expectations in regards to teasing/bullying behavior. In follow-up for this our classroom guidance sessions and
individual/group sessions are addressing this area, as well as the classroom teachers monitoring these behaviors closely. We are teaching the students the difference between tattling and reporting. Tattling is going to the teacher about little things that happen that
are not hurting anyone physically, verbally, or emotionally. Reporting involves reporting to (telling) the teacher, para-professional, principal, and /or counselor about behaviors in
which someone is in danger of or has been hurt physically, verbally, or emotionally by a repeated, purposeful act of negative behavior. Have your children tell you more about this topic concerning definitions of the bully, victim, and the bystander. Please contact the guidance office if you have questions or concerns. Parental input and support is important in teaching about teasing/bullying. Thank you to the 5th grade parents who participated with their child in the interviews about bullying. We are learning a lot from your experiences, opinions, and input.
The sixth grade is finishing the career unit by presenting their projects on the career of their choice. We will be starting the ALL STARS Program soon. I am excited as we are in our sixth year of this program. The involvement of the parents has contributed to the
success of the program, so I look forward to your participation in the activities your child will bring home.
May each of you enjoy a blessed Christmas and have a special holiday season with your family and friends.
