Crofton Elementary School News Posted on Monday, October 18
Tony Simons – Elementary Principal

October 15th marks the end of the first academic quarter. Report
cards will be handed out on Thursday, October 21st at the end of the
school day. Please be reminded that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday,
October 22nd.

An important topic this time of year is the issue of homework.
Students in grades 4, 5, & 6 have some homework on a daily basis.
Students are usually given time at the end of a class period to start
on their homework and generally have a study hall time. The school
has a homework policy in the student handbook. When a student begins to have late or incomplete homework the cause is typically that the student does not use their free time wisely by doing their homework in school. I frequently ask students in grades 4-6 if they have homework for that evening. To my surprise, 50-60% of the students I talk to do not have homework for that night.

Why is homework so important? In today’s No Child Left Behind
environment homework has a higher value. Teacher’s need to know if students have mastered the knowledge and skills that they have been taught. This is the first indication as to their readiness to take a
Nebraska State Academic Standards Assessment (STARS). With state
academic standards comes an element of accountability for the teacher, student, and the school. When students don’t perform well
on state standards assessments teacher’s have to go back and re-teach and re-assess students. This takes time and the pace of instruction slows down. Time becomes a huge factor when trying to fit today’s curriculum and assessment into a 36 week school year.
That is why we stress to students that they must be responsible for
their homework.

Research shows that when students take personal responsibility for
their homework and learning they make long-lasting cognitive
learning connections that put learned knowledge and skills into
long-term memory that they can draw on as they learn new
information. If you have a student that is experiencing homework
problems you might first examine if they are using their time
effectively at school and home. Most students have the ability to do
the work, but some don’t have the organizational and time management skills. You can help at home with a set homework schedule and by making your child accountable for their homework. All students are required to use an assignment notebook. Ask your child to see their assignment notebook so you can monitor their homework progress. This is a good communication tool so you can stay informed. Remember, it’s their homework, not yours!

KINDERGARTEN

We mapped our K-room. Its amazing all the stuff that goes in a map! We made fancy patterns at least three with all kinds of stuff. We have lots of patterns hanging in our room. We’ve assessed on patterns but some have a tough time going past an AB pattern. We
need to get fancy. Yeah!! We started with our letter books this
week! I sent home a parent letter to introduce you to them. I hope
you like them as much as we do. We even listen to directions from a
tape to see how well everyone can listen. Next week Aa. We talked
about what happens first and last. Do you get out of bed or brush
your teeth first in the morning? Do you hear the g first or last in
rag? Thank you to all of you who were able to attend our conferences. Time was short we know, if you ever have questions,
feel free to call. In math we’re working on positional words and left and right. Positional words are up, down, middle, over, under, etc. These are important in following directions. We have talked about sounds at the beginning and end of words. Now we are listening
for the /a/sound in the middle of a word. We practiced writing Gg,
Cc, Oo and Aa and our name. Its really hard to keep between and on
the lines. Mrs. Paulsen and Mrs. Hoffman think we’re getting
better all the time. We got to make a picture of animals having a
picnic under an apple tree, We even used animal crackers for our
animals! We made jack-o-lanterns for our bulletin board and
spiders for our room. We watched a spooky video with Winnie the
Pooh and are listening to lots of fun Halloween Books. We sang
Hokey, Pokey. Left and right are hard things to do.

FIRST GRADE

We have been staying very busy in school. On October 1st we had
our "Special Friends" from Majestic Bluffs come and visit. We made
scarecrows for them. They took the scarecrows with them and will
hang them on their doors and other places. We had lots of fun
visiting with them. We are looking forward to their next visit.

We just started our second Reading book after a week of testing. Our
story was about all the different things that grow. It was fun to read. We are reading lots of books in AR. Next week we will do a STAR test to find our reading range. Math keeps us busy adding on our Time Test and solving subtraction problems. We have to complete 28 addition facts in 1 minute. Some of us have made it and some of us are really close. They are fun to do.

In Science we are talking about Weather and how the Seasons
change. We have looked at lots of fall pictures. We found out that the shade can keep us cool and comfortable on a warm summer day. We had to keep track of the weather for 1 week. We discovered that the temperature can vary from morning to evening. The weather can change really quickly.

Report cards will be sent home on October 21. Fall Break is October
22-no school. Our Halloween party is set for October 29th. We can bring a costume to school for the party. We will change into our costume for the party.
Have a good weekend!

SECOND GRADE

Thank you for coming to Parent Conferences! It was nice to meet
with you.

We are working on our 2nd Reading Unit called “Now I Know.” In
two weeks we’ll be taking a Unit test.

We have been learning about Place Value in Math. We continue to
work on Math Facts daily.

In Science we are studying habitats. We created a woodland,
swamp, desert and seashore terrariums. We are also collecting
spiders, flies (thanks to the contributors.), while we discuss the
Spider’s habitat, life cycle, eating habits, etc.

We have been reading about”Our Earth” in Social Studies. We have
discussed the different landforms, natural resources, etc.

We are trying to include as many details as we can in our story
writing.

We will begin cursive handwriting, very soon. Everyone is very
excited!

Mary Jean Zavadil and Barb Parsons have planned the Halloween
party. Dustin is in charge of drinks. Molly, Brent, Josh G., &
Samantha are are responsible for snacks.

Report cards will be sent home on October 21st. Watch for this in
your child’s Homework Folder.

Reminders:
Oct. 20th - 1:50 dismissal
Oct. 22nd - No School
Oct. 29th - Halloween party
Dec. 9th - Christmas Concert at 7:30

THIRD GRADE

We had a great time at Garrity’s on Tuesday, we voted on which was
our favorite activity, the hay maze and playing after lunch tied for
the honor, also on the list of fun things were the wagon ride
through the apple orchard and pumpkin patch and picking
pumpkins. Everybody got to take a pumpkin home with them. We
will paint our pumpkins in school and use them to decorate our
classroom, then take them home before Halloween so that they can
be used at home too.

In Reading we have been working on the skills of using context clues to find the meaning of new words, and following steps in a process.
We have been reading stories in the second unit entitled “A New
View.” One of the stories is from the point of view of two ants. It
was fun trying to imagine what the world of humans would seem
like to an ant. The next story is a fantasy about some fox fairies. It is told using tangrams. Tangrams are lots of fun to play with,
however sometimes it is difficult to reproduce some of the shapes.

In math we have been adding and subtracting numbers in the
thousands, and ten thousands places, both with and without
regrouping. It's really not hard, it just takes careful work.

We would like to thank all the parents who visited our class to tell us about their jobs. We thought that all the jobs sounded interesting and we learned a lot of new things.

In Science we have begun to study about space. So far we have
learned what it is like on the moon. We have compared what it
would be like to live on the moon. We have compared what it would
be like to live on the moon to what it is like to live on Earth.

We have begun learning and reviewing the cursive letters, so far
everyone is doing a marvelous job.

In Accelerated Reader we are trying to reach our goal for the first
quarter. Some have already surpassed their goal, and others may
not make it. We will set new goals for next quarter and try to reach
them.

Important coming events:
October 15, 2004 end of first quarter
October 20th Inservice - student dismissal at 1:50
October 22nd No school fall break
October 29th Halloween Party

FOURTH GRADE

We have been busy in the fourth grade. Our first class party is on
Oct. 29th. A note has been sent home about which committee each
student is on. We just had a class meeting to decide who would
bring what for the party. Ask your child about it.

For our reading class we are just completing the unit “Let’s Find
Out.” We have learned that nature holds many mysteries and
surprises. The class has been working on drawing conclusions,
main ideas, details, and author’s purpose and point of view.

In language we have been writing personal narratives. The class is
now working on common nouns, proper nouns and how to make nouns plural and possessive. We will soon be writing explanations.

The fourth grade has been practicing their cursive writing. All
assignments are to be done in cursive unless otherwise stated.

The class has just been assigned their Native American projects
which are due on Oct. 26th. The projects are to be done outside of
class. In social studies we are now learning about the Louisiana
Purchase and Lewis and Clark. We will soon be studying the
Westward movement across Nebraska to reach the promised land of California.

FIFTH GRADE

October 15 marks the last day of the first 9 weeks. Can you believe
it? The fifth grade class has been very busy with all of our subjects!

In Science we have just started a new chapter called Exploring the
Night Sky. So far we have made plainispheres which helps us figure
out the locations of different constellations that are visible at
different times of the year.

Miss Hebbert is teaching us about European explorers, for example
the Vikings. The Vikings were skilled sailor. Their home land is
Scandinavian northern Europe.

We have found exponents in Math to be very challenging to some
but easy to others. As you know we have been doing accelerated
math. We have found that it has some advantages and some
disadvantages. One of the advantages is that its faster and we don’t
have to take the time to correct. Some disadvantages are that if some one gets behind the class has to wait, but we survive.

We have just started a new story in Reading called “The Gold Coin.”
It is about a thief who wants to steal a gold coin and had many
adventures trying to get it.

In language we have been studying plural, singular, possessive
nouns, and how to write them, We have had a little trouble with
this, but compound words are a snap.

Reminders -
Oct. 20th - Inservice - students dismissed at 1:50
Oct. 22nd - No School - Fall Break
Oct. 29th - Halloween Party

Have a happy Halloween!!
By: Katie, Megan, Tracy & Heather

SIXTH GRADE

The first MONTH of school went by extremely fast. In Math we’re
just starting timings, in Science we just started learning about algae, and in social studies we are learning about the times in
B. C.!

We started timing in Math! We could definitely tell some got way
better over the summer! D.J. Sterk (AKA Swidie), for example, has
gotten into the top five, but for the last few years only girls
dominated the top five, and D.J. has changed all that!

In science we’ve just started a new chapter. It’s about
microorganisms, which are pretty facinating. We are able to see
them on the T.V. because of the new device Mrs. Schurman got! It’s
awesome!

In Social Studies we are learning about the times 3,000 B.C. to 2,000
B.C. It’s amazing to see what happened when our ancestors and
beyond’s lifetime.

In Reading we are reading a story called: "Philip Hall Likes Me I
Reckon Maybe." We read it over night and this time D.J. Sterk and
Kayli Morrow are asking questions about the story.

For other news Kayli Morrow had a birthday and turned 12! On
Monday (9/20/04) her mom came to school and decorated her like a
princess! (Feather Boa, Crown, Flowers, Balloons, chocolate, and a
Wand.) It was quite amusing. She was crowned Princess Kayli for
the day!

We hope the rest of the year turns out as well!

By: Cassie Tramp & Trent Arens

Elementary Guidance

Can you believe that we are finished with the first nine weeks? It
seems like we were just lamenting the fact that we were starting so
early! The fourth and fifth grades are finishing up the study skills
unit and that will be reflected on their report cards. I will be sending a letter to parents in regards to the students who will need some extra help this the second nine weeks. It seems like a lot of our homework obstacles this quarter have been due to the students not
being organized and prepared for class and also in taking the right
materials home at night. I would ask for your continued support in
this area as it will only help to alleviate problems in junior high and high school as we prepare your children for that experience.

As we finish up with the character trait of citizenship, we will begin this nine weeks with responsibility. Of course, the beginning of school requires responsibility on the part of the students, but now we will explore that trait more in depth. For K-2 you can ask your child about Ansvar, my friend who helps to teach about responsibility!

Operation Christmas Child is underway! The oldest in every family
brought home the information sheet on our Character Counts
citizenship project last week. Once again this is a voluntary project. We need to have the items to school and in the boxes by Friday, November 5th. We are starting to fill the boxes with some really nice gifts for those children less fortunate than we. Thank you in advance for your support of this project and our Character Counts Program.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Mr. Simons and I took six of our
5th and 6th grade students to the elementary leadership conference
at Wayne State College. The conference is sponsored by the Region
III Principals Association in cooperation with the WSC education
department. This year's theme was "Attitude is Everything". The
students attended four different break-out sessions including topics
on: self confidence, self esteem, and positive attitude. They came
back to Crofton very excited about passing some of this positive
attitude on to others! We are in the process of developing some
activities for these students to present to the other classes. I am
having "working lunch" meetings with them to plan these sessions.
Those students attending were: Trent Arens, Katie Mueller, Maxine
Schieffer, Raychel Schurman, Emily Tejral, and Emma Tramp.

Happy Fall to all of you!
